Just Australian Things

Hello again, as you may or may not know, I am Australian. When you think of Australia or Aussies in general, you may think of 'shrimp on the barbie' or how we say mate after every sentence. Well probably what most of what your thinking may be true but some things just aren't true. Here are some slangs or just words in general that we say that others don't.

Bottle-O
Bottle-O is basically a liquor store, "your only 15 how do you know this", well as a matter of fact, I live across the road from one, I usually just call a liquor store, a liquor store. But for the true Aussie slang we would say Bottle-O

Thong
Now a thong, not the kind of thong that goes between your two cheeks, no, no, no. A thong is what goes on your feet, in other countries you would call this 'sandals' or 'flip flops'. But in Australia we call it a thong. If you search up 'Australian Thong' you'll see what they look like

Esky
Only Australians would know what a esky is, if you know what a esky is and your no Australian, well your a bloody legend. A esky is basically a 'cooler', its when you can keep cold beverages and cold food stored away, but mainly beverages.

Shrimp on the barbie
Okay now, this is what I don't get. In Australia we don't have shrimp, we have prawns. So this slang is stupid as we don't even have shrimp, but its better than saying 'do you wanna have a prawn on the barbie', it just doesn't sound the same.

Arvo
In Australia we like to shorten our words as short as possible. Arvo just means afternoon, eg. I'll see you in the arvo.

Big Smoke
Big smoke just means big city, eg. Melbourne or Sydney

Dag
Now a dag may sound like a bad word but it actually isn't, a dag just means someone that is being funny, or being stupid, eg. your a dag (as is your funny)

G'Day
Everyone should know this word by now. As I said before, Aussie's love to shorten there words as much as possible, so G'Day just means good day.

Grouse
Grouse just means great or terrific, eg. that party last night was grouse (or in 2018 you could say lit haha)

Hotel
Growing up I thought that a hotel is where people stay and sleep, but then I realised that a motel is what you use for that. So a hotel is like pub

Lollies
In every single country apart from Australia, we call them lollies, Lollies is candy, I don't know why we call it that but we do haha

Now that is all I have time for, if you would like to know more about Australian Slang or just Australian things in general, you can always search it up yourself or on youtube. Thank you and good-bye

xx
